Schenectady County carries a housing stock shaped by over a century of industrial heritage. The GE campus and the Stockade District define the city at the county's core — one of the oldest continuously occupied European settlements in North America, ringed by neighborhoods of Victorian and early-20th-century homes built for engineers and workers who came to participate in the electric age. The suburbs of Niskayuna and Rotterdam spread the mid-century ranch and colonial outward, while the western reaches of the county — Glenville, Duanesburg, Princetown — return to the agricultural character that predates the industrial era entirely.
