Rensselaer County sits on the east bank of the Hudson, anchored by the city of Troy — a former industrial center whose decline preserved one of the finest collections of 19th-century architecture in the Northeast. The brownstones along Washington Park, the row houses of North Central, and the working-class homes near the Burden Iron Works waterfront all tell the story of a city that was once among the wealthiest in America. South of Troy, the suburban towns of East Greenbush and North Greenbush developed in the postwar era with colonials and ranches that now represent the county's largest renovation market. Further east, Brunswick and Averill Park climb into the hill country toward the Taconic and Massachusetts border, where farmhouses and lake properties define a genuinely rural character.
